In 2011, three out of every four tablets sold in the US were iPads – one of which went to Karl Lagefeld’s 9-month-old Siamese cat. (She also has two maids.)
Yes, with everyone from Vogue to industry bible Women’s Wear Daily putting out digital versions from the iPad, it goes without saying that the fashion set is enamoured - and the fashion houses have taken note.
“Which would you rather have: three iPads or an iPad case?” the New York Times’ Stephanie Rosenbloom asked, referring to the Chanel lambskin case, which came in at the cost of US$1,500. If you’re a fan of Chanel’s quilted skins or Bottega Veneta’s intrecciato weave, you know the answer. Who needs three iPads anyway?
As Lauren Pazzaneze, owner of a fashion and design blog, told Forbes, "Think of it as the perfect blank canvas with which a flashy and overly expensive case can be designed for." Touché.
But for the discerning gent, we present five inimitable cases that nod to style rather than scream bloody logomania – unless that’s your thing, of course.
1. Bottega Veneta Intrecciato Leather iPad Case
The intrecciato weave is a dead giveaway, making this the perfect match for a connoisseur of craftsmanship – and the pocketbook to back it up. Sure, the label prides itself on it’s discreet, no-label design, but seriously, everyone knows it’s a Bottega Veneta. No compartments of hidden pockets on this one, just a big pocket with big cache.
2. Bleecker Painted Stripe Tablet Sleeve
Also banking on its heritage, the Coach case from the brand’s Legacy collection mines an equestrian past for this 21st century tool. The hide comes well burnished while the stripe adds a hint of the athletic trend on the runways.
3. Burberry Prorsum Studded Leather Tablet Cover
We have to give it to Christopher Bailey again this season for Burberry’s entry into the game. Ho-hum cases abound, but this cover could make a grown man cry with its studded finish and brass clasp. (Try smacking him over the head with it. Also, it’s a work of art.) For this one, Bailey reached into Burberry’s storied past and pulled out The Sex Pistols.
4. Marc By Marc Jacobs Blue Logo Cartridge iPad Case
We know: logomania – but with a colour to match an Adidas tracksuit and a silhouette as padded as Missy Elliot, we had to take this Marc By Marc Jacobs case with a twist of irony. This bright-eyed neoprene case has pep its step – and truthfully, your iPad couldn’t be more snug.
5. Comme des Garçons Leather iPad Case
With it’s designer’s avant-garde leanings, it’s interesting that Comme des Garçons’ Rei Kawakubo would offer such a sober take on this hyper-visible accessory. The sleek black leather finish commands respect. It’s monolithic surface, punctuated by stick-straight stitching around its edge, makes this ideal for the urbanite and the Kierkegaard fan.
Unlike many other cases in this category, this case opens up notebook-style to offer a series of pockets – for the man who actually has things to carry around aside from the one shiny accessory.
