PANORAMA: Recent art from contemporary Asia

TYPE: Art & Museums

VENUE: Singapore Art Museum, 71 Bras Basah Road.

INFORMATION:

The PANORAMA series of exhibitions offers a wide lens to examine our world and allows for a diversity of perspectives, charting some of these issues, which are pervading contemporary art-making in Asia today - social and political change, the negotiation over values, escalating urbanisation and the subsequent pressures on nature.

Artists such as Agnes Arellano reminds us of the power of myths and its role in constructing tradition and identity, Agus Suwage tracks the legendary figures that influenced the history and thinking of today, Nalini Malani recalls the religious conflict that caused many deaths in India, while :phunk points us to electricity, as a symbol of the creative energy that propelled innovation and the growth of modern global cities like Singapore.

Drawn entirely from the contemporary art collection of the Singapore Art Museum, this first edition of PANORAMA features 23 artists from 8 countries working in painting, sculpture, drawing, installation, photography, video and installation.

Join SAM Assistant Curator, David Chew, on the Curator's tour of contemporary art in Asia, taken from the collections of the Singapore Art Museum. He will discuss how the works reveal the unique time and context we live in by charting issues that pervade art-making in the region – from social and political change, to the negotiation of values, as well as the escalating urbanization and subsequent pressures.
