Stefano Pilati has parted ways with Yves Saint Laurent and will give his final show for the Parisian maison, on 5 March 2012 in Paris. Though the news of his departure has been confirmed, they did little to overshadow the Italian designer’s ravishing spring summer collection for 2012.
Sleek and minimalistic, there was a concentration on form and structure -- boxy white jacket, svelte cigarette pants or narrowing pencil skirts, paired with backless silk tops or sleeveless shawl collared shirts.
Despite mixed reviews over the creative director’s years at YSL, Stefano Pilati churned out much lauded designs, developing particularly successful bags and shoes (remember the YSL Tribute?).
In this collection, witness signature Pilati oomph and sophistication as he pays homage to Bunuel’s 1960′s film Belle de Jour -- silk halter neck tops neatly tucked into svelte cigarette pants, puffed-sleeve blouses contrasted against figure-flattering pencil skirts (kindly revamped with a mini-slit in the hem) and silk paisley maxi skirt cinched by an embellished leather belt.
The S/S '12 collection played homage to Bunuel’s 1960′s film 'Belle de Jour', featuring the gorgeous femininity of YSL's high-drama ruffles, seen in the side panels of the rich sapphire blue dress.
We adore the YSL signature ruffle and everything else that embodied the Saint Laurent woman -- uptight-chic, with little need for rosy, sugary pastel hues or large floral patterns that many other designers swear by for summer collections.
Saturated jewel tones that were usually reserved for fall coloured the walkway with rich sapphire, amethyst and turquoise, occasionally interrupted by sheer whites. The women’s wearables also played with luxurious fabrics and varying volumes.
There is something for every shoe lover to put her best foot forward to greatness -- ranging from low heeled, flat soled, ankle strapped shoe to lofty platforms.
