Relive Election Fever with "Cooling Off" Day

TYPE: Concerts & Musicals

VENUE: SOTA (School of the Arts) Drama Theatre

INFORMATION:

In the electrifying months leading up to the watershed 2011 General Elections, and in the tumultuous months after, playwright Alfian Sa’at interviewed Singaporeans to discover their responses to these searching questions. Boldly putting aside concerns about secrecy, the interviewees opened their hearts to share what they honestly felt and what they truly believe.

Covering a wide social and political spectrum, the candid interviews capture the GE experience through the voices of individual Singaporeans – from election candidates to pro-establishment civil servants; from taxi-drivers to teachers; from diehard opposition supporters to young people casting their virgin votes. From the transcripts of these real- life interviews emerges a script that chronicles the momentous event that not only rocked the boat, but created startling ripples that are still widening even now.

The private clashes behind the public debates... the personal convictions behind the party politics... even that unforgettable moment as they finally stood alone in the polling booth with pen in hand, poised to make their mark... These interviews – some hopeful, some fearful, some hilariously frank, some achingly honest – form a portrait of Singaporeans confronting the real meaning of democracy and rediscovering their roles in shaping the country’s future.

An ensemble of the most versatile actors, playing characters aged 17 to 70, takes on these Singaporean voices – in a playful and poignant piece of testimony theatre that proves how political views are not just the hot air of coffeeshop talk.

Girl Talk: The Musical

TYPE: Art & Museums

VENUE: Jubilee Hall, Raffles Hotel Singapore

INFORMATION:

Ladies looking for a wild night of fun, dance and laughter can look forward to MediaCorp VizPro International’s upcoming musical, Girl Talk. Held from 21 February till 4 March 2012, the Singapore performances feature the original cast from its sold-out off-Broadway shows in New York - Tina Jensen (as Barbara), Priscilla Fernandez (as Dr. Laura) and the director Sonya Carter who will double up as Janice.

The plot is set in the final broadcast of radio show Girl Talk after 10 years, and the women are set to end things with a bang. In the radio show helmed by three deejays: eccentric Barbara, “perfect-jane” Janice and the sexually rambunctious Dr Laura, Girl Talk follows the three women through topics close to the hearts of all women - sex, food, alcohol, babies, and what else, men! When it’s time for the deejays to hit the music, the audience can expect to sing along and groove to the popular music hits performed by these talented ladies.

Written by Louise Roche, Tim Flaherty and Sonya Carter, and directed by Sonya Carter, Girl Talk follows the same hit formula as Menopause: The Musical in its women-centric theme. Advocating the sentiment that “husbands and jobs can come and go, but girlfriends are forever”, Carter says “it’s really about understanding each other as women, and even with all of our crazy idiosyncrasies, we know that we’ll always stand by each other”.

So ladies, take out your feather boas and get ready to jive to the beat. And gentlemen looking for some lady fun will also find themselves laughing too, albeit at their own expense!

Event: Girl Talk: The Musical
Date: 21 February to 4 March 2012
Venue: Jubilee Hall, Raffles Hotel Singapore
Admission: Fridays to Sundays, $83 & $63, Tuesdays to Thursdays, $73 & $53
