Check in: Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park, the first in Asia

While Bangkok makes a great weekend getaway for authentic Thai food and some of the largest weekend markets in the world, such as the famous Chatuchak, the city is also renowned for its luxury offerings. The Hangover Part II, for example, shifted from Las Vegas to Bangkok — seeing several scenes taking place at the Sky Bar and award-winning Sirocco Restaurant, one of the highest and swankiest dining establishments in the world.

Indeed, Bangkok is a vibrant cosmopolitan city where one can indulge in the high life — with its gargantuan shopping centres boasting luxury brands, world-renowned bars and restaurants, revolutionary skyscrapers, and some of the most opulent hotels and serviced apartments in Southeast Asia. So it comes as no surprise that Marriott International chose the Thai capital as the location for its latest Marquis hotel — which also marks the debut of the hotel chain’s ‘Marquis’ designation in Asia.

The lavish lobby is reminiscent of a grand palace.

Following in the footsteps of cities such as New York, San Francisco, Washington DC and Dubai, Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park is the eighth of its kind in the world. To attain the ‘Marquis’ status, the hotels have to possess certain qualities, such as having a good location in the heart of a major city, impressive architecture that has potential to be a city landmark, over 1,000 beautifully-designed guest rooms equipped with high-tech and innovative components, as well as a focus on culinary inventiveness through a curated range of food and beverage options.

Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park, opened in November last year, is a magnificent five-star hotel that boasts 1,360 rooms and suites, five existing dining establishments, 35 distinct meeting venues, three ballrooms, two outdoor pools, a 24-hour fitness centre, and an authentic Thai spa — easily checking off all the boxes expected of a Marquis-designated hotel.

Location

The luxury hotel is located in the beating, bustling heart of the Thai capital. Located along Sukhumvit Road, Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park is surrounded by the city’s most vibrant shopping, business and entertainment districts — and is within close proximity to Phrom Phong’s BTS skytrain station.

Taking a 10-minute stroll through lush Benchasiri Park accessible from the hotel’s back entrance will lead you to one of Bangkok’s premium shopping districts, home to The EmQuartier and Emporium shopping centres. Here, you can find a wide selection of luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada, Jimmy Choo, and Dolce & Gabanna. Bangkok is synonymous with shopping, after all.

Rooms

There’s nothing better after a day of retail therapy than to retreat into a swanky hotel room fit for a queen (or king). We stayed at the M Suite, which boasts 72 square metres of space, and includes a separate bedroom and living areas flanked by large floor-to-ceiling glass windows that offer panoramic views of the city.

Interiors flawlessly blend Thai influences with stunning modern design, where one can find illustrations inspired by local culture and Thai transcripts subtly engraved on the walls, juxtaposed by modern furniture, a muted colour palette and marble flooring and bathroom counters. Local touches can even be seen in the mini bar, which is stocked with local snacks, coffee and liquor.

The room is also fully equipped with amenities such as charging points at every corner, two plasma televisions with a selection of channels, as well as the all-important work desk located in the living room — making it perfect for business travellers.

Dining

With five existing dining establishments boasting unique offerings, Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park is a culinary destination in its own right. In fact, three of the hotel’s restaurants — namely Goji Kitchen + Bar, Pagoda Chinese Restaurant and Siam Tea Room — are highly ranked by travellers as some of Bangkok’s best dining destinations, which is an impressive feat for a newly-opened hotel.

Goji Kitchen + Bar, where we had breakfast every morning, is a buffet-style restaurant with a range of options. From Thai-style omelette with minced pork to masala dosa (a South Indian fermented crepe made from rice batter and black lentils) prepared at different wok stations, there is enough variety to satisfy every palate.

Pagoda Chinese Restaurant

Pagoda Chinese Restaurant carries an ambience reminiscent of the Chinese dynasty to Bangkok, and is one of the highest rated Chinese restaurants in the city. We were even treated to a performance by a kung fu tea master, a tradition stemming from ancient times. If you’re dining at the restaurant, you can experience this art form live every day at 12:30pm and 7:30pm.

Must-try dishes are the classic Peking duck (which is served with Chinese pancakes, spring onions and hoisin sauce), chee cheong fun (steamed rice rolls that are steamed to perfection), and the barbecued pork bun — a signature dish from the restaurant’s dim sum selection.

For authentic local cuisine, head to Siam Tea Room, located at the hotel’s lobby. We recommend the Tom Yum Goong (a spicy and sour Thai soup prepared with lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, fresh Thai chilies, and fresh lime juice), Gaeng Hoe Goong Pak Ruam (Chiang Mai-style stir-fried glass noodles in curry sauce with tiger prawn, pork ribs and mixed vegetables), as well as the soft walnut brioche toast, served with pandan custard and topped with fresh young coconut.

Amenities

As with every other Marriott Marquis hotel in the world, Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park boasts an impressive range of amenities spread out amongst its two towers. If you choose to stay within the hotel compound, you can kick back and relax by taking a dip in the two outdoor pools, sweat it out at the gym with state-of-the-art equipment, or take part in the regular activity classes — ranging from Muay Thai and Thai Fit to yoga.

A luxury retreat in the heart of Bangkok.

While you can find massage parlours in Bangkok at every turn, not many can compete with Quan Spa’s pristine ambience and professional staff. The hotel’s signature spa is an elegant retreat featuring stunning contemporary design with Thai influences. On our last day in Bangkok, we indulged in a traditional massage which relieved our aching bodies, perfectly rounding off our vacation in the exotic city.

Marriott members get more

Since our stay coincided with the launch of the partnership between Marriott International and major American music corporation Universal Music Group (UMG), we got to enjoy the benefits of a Marriott Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest member. This comes after the merger of Marriott International and Starwood Hotels, where members can now enjoy rewards across both platforms.

Perks of being a combined loyalty program member include once-in-a-lifetime auction packages you can bid on. These range from being treated to exclusive concerts, sound check and meet-and-greet sessions with UMG’s musicians, to complimentary stays at the hotel. During our trip, we got to catch a gig by multi-platinum rock band Imagine Dragons , which featured hits such as Radioactive and Demons. Seeing how UMG has many other big-name artists such as The Weeknd, Lana Del Rey, Kanye West, Lady Gaga, and Eminem under its belt, we’re certain that future concerts will be equally thrilling.

Verdict

If you’re looking to stay in a sanctuary enveloped in nature and surrounded by quiet beaches, you will not find it here. But that’s not what you go to Bangkok for, anyway. Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park is an urban oasis located at Sukhumvit, the commercial centre of the city — making it the ideal venue for both business and leisure travellers who are looking to shop to their heart’s content and experience everything the Thai capital has to offer.
