A popular suit design amongst Wall Street stockbrokers in the ’80s, the double-breasted suit is characterised by its large, oversized box-shaped silhouette (which used to be accompanied by a wide tie, wide leg trousers and a ridiculously large cellphone too). However, younger generations deemed the power suit too stuffy, and therefore, opted for a shorter and more slim-fitting silhouette with ultra-thin lapels — a style which took the reigns for the past several decades. Now, it seems, the double-breasted suit is back.
For Fall/Winter 2017, designers are bringing back the double-breasted blazer, with brands including Balenciaga, Lanvin, Versace, Paul Smith, MSGM and many more presenting their own interpretations on the runway. Nothing like the blazers our grandparents used to wear, these stylish suits have been given a modern upgrade from today’s top designers, making it a unique statement piece you can rock with just a little styling effort. To help you get a head start on the double-breasted trend, we’ve selected a few of our favourite pieces below.
