These gorgeous new Sony gadgets will blend seamlessly into your home

Updated on May 19 2017

Recently exhibiting at Good Design Store in PMQ was Sony’s latest Life Space UX range; lifestyle home products designed to be versatile and stylish to blend into any living space. The series features the Portable Ultra Short Throw Projector, the Glass Sound Speaker and the LED Bulb Speaker, although the latter is currently only available for retail in Japan due to compatibility issues in Hong Kong.

1. Portable Ultra Short Throw Projector (HK$7,990)

For audiovisual geeks who love the idea of having a home cinema setup but don’t want to be confined to a particular room, the Portable Ultra Short Throw Projector is a worthy toy to cop. Controlled via smartphone app, the short-distance projector allows you to display anything you want: from movies and TV shows to pictures from your social media feed, or even the time and weather — as long as it can be connected wirelessly or through the accompanying HDMI unit — all directly on a blank wall.

With a compact design, the projector can be placed on a table or by a wall (or anywhere, really) to display images at HD 720p resolution up to 80” in size. There’s an accompanying floor stand (HK$1,590) that you can buy too if you like projecting at eye-level and above. The projector is made with easy to clean materials, as well as a leather finish to provide extra grip on the sides. For audiophiles, Sony’s top-notch sound technology is incorporated into the device, with two 25mm bass speakers and the xLOUD system, which helps bring up volumes without compromising quality.

Another nifty trick is that the device turns on automatically when you approach it with your smartphone, and turns off when it senses the phone is far away — but we imagine this might get annoying when you want to text around the house and put Netflix on at the same time.

2. Glass Sound Speaker (HK$6,490)

For those who enjoy the warmth of candlelight at home and want to relax to their favourite tunes in the evening, the Glass Sound Speaker of the Life Space UX range knocks two birds with one gorgeous looking stone. Resembling a carafe or a modern-day oil lamp, the Glass Sound Speaker may look simplistic, but there’s actually a lot of tech packed into the device.

Underneath the filament lamp, it’s equipped with a built-in 50mm woofer for powerful mid-tones and a translucent passive radiator for deep bass, while the glass tube above helps to transfer music in every direction in the room, so it can sound like a live performance — you can also pair two speakers together to switch between double and stereo modes. Controls and audio jacks are subtly located at the base of the aluminium body to complete the minimalistic look.

Apart from controlling the music wirelessly from your phone, you can also adjust the brightness of the lantern through an app. On that note, it is an LED filament lamp, but doesn’t have the harsh daylight white glare we’re perhaps more used to, instead bathing the room in a soft orange glow. The speaker can play for four hours straight in Bluetooth wireless mode before it needs to be plugged in, which makes it a beautiful alternative to bulky outdoor speakers for picnics and camping trips.

3. LED Bulb Speaker

If you shun the idea of having bulky speakers at home, the LED Bulb Speaker is one worth paying attention to. This sleek bulb seamlessly blends a lightbulb with a speaker, allowing for strong, uniform illumination as well as maximum sound quality — simply twist it into a lightbulb socket to enjoy. Unlike traditional LED room lights, the Bulb Speaker offers a focused reading lamp in an array of cosy colours rather than illuminating the entire room. So if an upgrade in ambience is something you’re looking for at home, you’ll want to keep an eye on its Hong Kong release date on the Sony website.
